Spotter
My brothers used to spot each other when they lifted weights so they could work to their maximum. Unless they were arguing or unavailable then they’d lift alone. Going solo, they’d leave the cap off the bar so they could tilt off weights and avoid getting pinned. I heard the weights crashing on the basement floor more than once; glad my brother was chipping cement instead of choking. I never tried it; am not a lifter, but I imagine it must be difficult to get the bar at just the right angle when you’re already under more than you can carry.

lighten the load, indeeed.
lifting with a partner is so inherently different than doing it alone. goes far beyond the safety or social aspects. you’re forced to determine your confidence at the moment, to decide to run the risk and see if, once again, you can tap the well that’s nourished you before, to summon from within yourself the hidden strength that’s not found in the particular muscles being used that are literally quivering from overuse or exhaustion. there’s no help, there’s no support… it’s just you, and god damn it you better get that weight up off you because no one else will.
quite a teeny tiny little defining moment in life
